How Kenyan Waste Pickers Are Fighting the Plastic Pollution Crisis

Solomon Njoroge and Joyce Wangari are waste pickers at Dandora, a sprawling dump site in Nairobi, Kenya. At 40 acres, it’s one of the largest in Africa. Originally opened in 1975 with World Bank funds, it was deemed “full” over twenty years ago. Yet, it continues to operate, receiving over 2,000 metric tonnes of waste each day that waste pickers like Joyce and Solomon hunt through in search of materials that can be recycled. Until now, waste pickers have been ghost workers; unrecognized, unprotected, succumbing to lung diseases and cancer from living amid toxic waste, inhaling smoke from burning plastic and scraping a living in some of the worst conditions possible. Right now, a Global Plastics Treaty is being negotiated that could change this and finally turn the tide on the plastic pollution emergency. The Waste Pickers Association is fighting tooth and nail to make sure that treaty matches the scale of this global crisis. But they’re up against some powerful forces. 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels — and Big Oil is making sure we produce more and more plastic each year. It’s time to break our toxic relationship with plastic. Join the movement of Global Citizens, governments, activists, and organizations around the world demanding action by endorsing the call for a Global Plastics Treaty. This video was made possible with funding from the Minderoo Foundation. _____________________________________________________________________ Global Citizen is a social action platform for a global generation that aims to solve the world’s biggest challenges. Studio Sessions with Loïca | GC Emerging Creative

Angela Valenzuela believes that music can create hope and togetherness. Performing under the name Loïca, she is a Chilean artist and activist, who uses her music to speak up about the climate crisis. Through her work, Valenzuela has been part of projects that use music and art to tell the story of the impact of the climate crisis. The involvement of communities affected by climate change in her work and in solutions against the crisis is important for Loïca as intersectionality is a crucial part of her politics. In addition to issues of poverty, loss, and damages as a result of the climate crisis, Valenzuela’s home country, Chile has challenges with a civic space that is considered narrowed, making the work of activists like Valenzuela both challenging and important. She believes activists and creatives like herself need to collaborate more — see the connection between one another’s struggles and work together to shape a better future. Loïca is an honoree of Global Citizen’s Emerging Creatives Program, which provides a platform for emerging creatives in the Global South that are using their art to call for change, shine a light on social injustices, and advocate for the advancement of the Global Goals, while highlighting the need for open civic space worldwide. 00:00 - 01:09 - Meet Angela Valenzuela 01:09 - 05:26 - Hombre de Papel Performance 05:26 - 06:52 - On Intersectionality 06:52 - 10:07 - Canción Porfiada Performance _____________________________________________________________________ Global Citizen is a social action platform for a global generation that aims to solve the world’s biggest challenges. A Bug Expert Is Helping Save Millions of People’s Sight in Benin, Alongside Global Citizen’s Actions

At the 2018 Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Johannesburg, Global Citizens took more than 5 million actions to end extreme poverty, culminating in 60 commitments, and $7.2 billion in funding from world leaders to fight extreme poverty, helping to make a difference in the lives of millions of people today. During the festival, in honor of Nelson Mandela, the Sightsavers led Accelerate program was launched, aimed at eliminating trachoma across 14 countries in the continent. This year we traveled to Benin to meet Sightsavers Senior Neglected Tropical Disease manager, Pelagie, who is leading teams to eliminate and provide treatment for trachoma, and other neglected tropical diseases, while helping whole communities regain eyesight and protect generations from disease.
