On Aug. 15, 2021, the Taliban marched into Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul, and everything changed. First came the bans on women and girls’ education. Then they were banned from working outside the home, prohibited from accessing public baths, parks, and gyms, and moving freely around the country. This extreme level of gender-based discrimination against women and girls, perpetrated with total impunity, is unparalleled globally. Pashtana Durrani is an Afghan feminist and educator who set up LEARN, a digital school network allowing girls to continue learning in secret. She has been living in exile since 2021. Earlier this year, she went on an undercover trip back to Afghanistan to visit her those schools. Now, she looks back on her experience over the past two years.
